Former Royal Engineer Jack Mayers raised the flag to mark Armed Forces Day at Broughton House
Jack, aged 90, moved into Broughton House last November and served in the 9 Para Squadron Royal Engineers.
He played a starring role at the ceremony at Broughton House when he hoisted the Armed Forces Day flag as staff, other veterans and guests looked on.
The Kohima Epitaph was read and there was a minute’s silence.
Afterwards the veterans were entertained by singer Maria Manchester, who performed 1940s songs.
The ceremony was the last to be held at the current Broughton House memorial before work begins on a multi-million pound redevelopment of the site.
A new memorial will be built as part of the new Veterans Care Village.
