Broughton House Veteran Care Village –
Who We Are
Broughton House is dedicated to supporting veterans and their families across Greater Manchester. What began during the First World War as a place of recovery for injured soldiers has evolved into a modern Veteran Care Village providing specialist care, independent living apartments and community support.
Today, our village brings together three vital services in one place: a purpose-built care home, independent retirement apartments and the Armed Forces Support Hub. Together, these services allow us to support veterans at every stage of life — from those living independently and in the community to those requiring specialist nursing or dementia care.
At the heart of Broughton House is a strong sense of camaraderie, dignity and community, ensuring that those who served their country can continue to live among people who understand their experiences.

A Legacy Of Care
Originally founded to care for soldiers returning from conflict who required treatment and rehabilitation, over time, our commitment to veterans’ wellbeing expanded from medical care into something much greater.
Today, Broughton House is a purpose-built Veteran Care Village in Greater Manchester, providing residential, nursing and dementia care alongside independent living accommodation and community support services. Every aspect of our environment has been designed with veterans in mind – from specialist care delivered by experienced professionals to the camaraderie that comes from living among those who share similar experiences.
Our legacy is built on compassion, dignity and understanding – values that continue to guide everything we do today.

Our History
Founded in 1916 during the First World War by Manchester doctor and military surgeon Colonel Sir William Coates, Broughton House’s goal was to care for wounded soldiers returning from the front lines. Hospitals across the region were overwhelmed, and many injured servicemen had nowhere suitable to recover.
With the support of local leaders and donors, Coates launched a public fundraising appeal that raised over £100,000 — enough to establish several homes for injured soldiers, including Broughton House in Salford.
One of the first residents was Private Charlie Fox, who arrived in 1917 after being severely injured at the Battle of Ypres. From these beginnings, Broughton House grew into a lifelong home and community for veterans. Over the past century, the charity has supported more than 8,000 former servicemen and women, continuing its mission to care for those who served their country.
Our Future
As the needs of the veteran community change, an increasing number of veterans are living longer, often with complex health conditions, dementia, or challenges such as loneliness, housing difficulties and mental health concerns.
Broughton House is committed to meeting these challenges by expanding the support we offer — strengthening our care services, developing community outreach through the Armed Forces Support Hub, and ensuring veterans across Greater Manchester can access the help they need.
As a charity, we rely on the generosity of supporters to continue this work. Donations help us provide life-changing care, vital services and a safe community for veterans today and in the future.
