Living at Broughton House: An Apartment Story

After losing his wife in 2021, 90-year-old RAF veteran Mike Clarke moved from Leeds to the Broughton House independent living apartments to be closer to his daughter in Manchester. The move allowed him to remain independent while becoming part of a community that understands military life.

Mike, a former Master Signaller who spent 22 years in the Royal Air Force flying maritime patrol missions over the Atlantic in Avro Shackletons, still leads an active and fulfilling life. He drives, keeps to his own daily routine, walks regularly, uses the gym, attends Mass and even spends time learning Spanish.

What Mike values most is the balance the apartments provide — the ability to maintain his own lifestyle while enjoying the companionship of fellow veterans. The familiar environment, with its military history, photographs and commemorative events such as VE Day celebrations, made Broughton House feel instantly welcoming.

Living here also removes many everyday worries. Maintenance and household issues are taken care of, giving Mike peace of mind and the confidence that he can continue to live independently within a supportive community for years to come.
