VETERAN PROFILE
Major (retd) Mike Winstanley MBE
Army · Major

Born: 1948
Age of Signing Up: 15
A man proud of his service, Mike’s career began at 15, with the Infantry Junior Leader’s Battalion. After basic training, he was thrilled to join The Cheshires – his county’s regiment.
By 21, Mike had been keeping the peace in Northern Ireland, with four separate emergency tours of duty.
In the early 70s, Mike was promoted to Sergeant for his skills and hard work. Postings in West Germany, Cyprus, Hong Kong, Bosnia and other destinations followed, as did an MBE, which Mike received for his devotion to duty in the 1989 New Year Honours List.
Mike continued to rise through the ranks, and was promoted from Warrant Officer to Lieutenant while serving in the UK. As a testament to his dedication and outstanding service, Mike was commissioned as a late entry officer, eventually retiring as a Major at the age of 55.
After the military, Mike worked at a museum and still likes to go on museum tours. A caring and compassionate man, he also rescued many dogs and visited shelters whenever he got the chance.
