Home Front Day Proves A Fantastic Fund-Razor!

Home Front Day Proves A Fantastic Fund-Razor!

Villagers in Simister near Prestwich raised over £2,000 for Broughton House at a 1940s Home Front Day, where resident Terry Yates had his beard cut off by his pals to help achieve the fantastic total.

Terry, 51, had grown his beard to 14 inches over nearly two years but was persuaded by pals to call time on it in the Same Yet Inn.

“It was a small sacrifice to make considering what the veterans of Broughton House have done for us in the past,” he said.

“I can always grow it back if I so desire.”

Terry, a married father of two who runs his own telecoms company, raised £1,060 for Broughton House from his amazing gesture.

The second 1940s Home Front Day was again organised by Sue and Paul Greenlees and attracted hundreds of people to Simister, which was decked out in bunting for the occasion.

Among the attractions were a display of armoured vehicles on the village green, a mobile interactive ‘living history’ museum, a mobile airsoft shooting range, wartime music, stalls, a vintage tea room, a raffle and a tombola.

Villagers wore 1940s clothing and took part in a disco at the Same Yet Inn and dancing with the Backstep Boogie Club outside the village hall.

Veterans from Broughton House and members of the Royal Naval Association Pendleton branch were among those who attended the event.

ASDA’s Pilsworth branch donated cakes and gifts, and Nycomm Ltd of Pendlebury, Salford, gave tombola prizes.

Sue and Paul said preparations are already under way for next year.

“It was another fantastic occasion and it was great to see the village come together for a superb cause,” said Sue.

“It’s turning into an annual event and is certainly putting Simister on the map, so we are already planning for next year.”

The event featured on BBC TV’s North West Tonight, Radio Manchester and in the local press.
