Our residents had double cause for celebration on VE Day.
The veterans donned their finery and enjoyed an afternoon of food and music to mark the 76th anniversary of the Allies’ Victory in Europe in the Second World War.
It was also a chance for the flag-waving veterans to celebrate Vaccination Elation, as they have all now received their second Covid-19 jabs.
Our home was decked out in bunting as residents put on their Broughton House blazers and Union Flag hats to tuck into a special buffet lunch, and they sang along to wartime songs performed by Sarah Dennis, who is known as The Veterans’ Sweetheart.
Members of the reservist 236 (Manchester) Squadron, which is part of the 156 Regiment Royal Logistic Corps, also visited Broughton House to mark VE Day.
Last year, lockdown meant Sarah had to perform her Broughton House VE Day concert over Facebook Live, but this time she was able to sing in person from the Broughton House Bubble – a Covid-safe glass pod in the reception area specially built for visitors by soldiers of 202 Field Squadron Corps of Royal Engineers.
Care home manager Alison Wiseman said: “It was a great pleasure to have Sarah singing in person this year and to welcome members of the 236 (Manchester) Squadron.
“Our special visitors and our brilliant staff team helped to make VE Day extra-special for our residents.
“It wasn’t just an occasion to mark the end of World War Two in Europe. It also gave our veterans the chance to celebrate their individual triumph over Covid.”
